Spiritual Direction

"The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of all I have said to you."

What is spiritual direction?

The purpose of spiritual direction is to invite the person being directed into a greater awareness of the movement of God in their own life and can be described as a conversation of three. The director, the directee, and the Holy Spirit who is the true guide, enter into a conversation together with a desire for deeper intimacy between the directee and the Lord. We believe that God is always pursuing us, always wanting to connect with us, and as we give Him space, He speaks and invites us to draw closer. Spiritual direction focuses on your personal journey with God and what is happening in the current season of your life with Him. This is not therapy or counseling. The director will not be diagnosing and will not give advice. Our directors are not licensed therapists or counselors. If things come up in a session that are beyond the scope of a trained spiritual director, you will be encouraged to seek a professional for therapy or counseling.

What does a session typically look like?

Each director has their own style but typically will create and hold a 50-minute space for the directee, once per month either in person or online. As we talk together, we are listening for the Holy Spirit to lead the conversation, and speak to your heart, mind, and soul. We do this by asking questions as prompted by the Spirit and following where He takes you. The director is the companion who gets to notice and name the traces of the Divine from what surfaces.

How do I choose a spiritual director?

We’d love to help you find a compatible spiritual director. As you work to find a good fit, here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • Browse our director's page and read their bios. Most of our directors offer a choice of online or in-person sessions. Which option would best fit in this season of your life?

  • Meet with 2-3 directors for a quick phone call, zoom, or coffee. Invest 30 minutes to get a sense of the director’s personality, style of direction, life experience, and training.

  • If you would like assistance in selecting a director from the Companions For Your Journey community, we’d be happy to meet with you to help you get a sense of what you’re looking for, and make recommendations accordingly.

  • Pray. Ask God to guide your choice as you discern and then choose.
